(1) 1301-1307 EDWARD OF CAERNARVON, fourth son of King Edward I, b at Caernarvon Castle 25 April 1284; became heir apparent on the death of his elder brother Alfonso, Earl of Chester 19 August 1284; had a grant of the Principality of Wales and Earldom of Chester by charter 7 February 1301, and was summoned to Parliament by these titles 2 June 1302-3 November 1306; s his father as King Edward II, 8 July 1307, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(2) 1343-1376 EDWARD OF WOODSTOCK, elder son of King Edward III, b at Woodstock 15 June 1330; heir apparent at birth; cr Earl of Chester 18 May 1333 and Duke of Cornwall 17 March 1337; cr Prince of Wales and invested at Westminster 12 May 1343; KG 1348: m 10 October 1361, his first cousin once removed, Joan, suo jure Countess of Kent (d at Wallingford Castle, Berkshire, 8 August 1385; buried Stamford, Lincolnshire), only daughter of Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent (sixth and youngest son of King Edward I), and widow of Thomas de Holand, 1st Earl of Kent, KG; dvp at Westminster 8 June 1376; buried Canterbury Cathedral; known to posterity, though not to his contemporaries, as “The Black Prince”; had issue, two sons.
(3) 1376-1377 RICHARD OF BORDEAUX, younger, but only surviving, son of the preceding, b at Bordeaux 6 January 1367; became heir apparent on the death of his father and was cr Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and Earl of Chester 20 November 1376; invested at Westminster 25 December 1376; KG, 23 April 1377; s his grandfather as King Richard II, 21 June 1377, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(4) 1399-1413 HENRY OF MONMOUTH, second, but eldest surviving, son of King Henry IV, b at Monmouth Castle 9 August 1387; became heir apparent on his father’s accession 29 September 1399; cr Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and Earl of Chester 15 October 1399; s his father as King Henry V, 20 March 1413, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(5) 1454-1471 EDWARD OF WESTMINSTER, only son of King Henry VI, b at Westminster Palace 13 October 1453; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall at birth; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester, 15 March 1454; invested at Windsor 9 June 1454: m August 1470, Anne (who m 2ndly, 12 July 1472, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III), younger daughter and co-heiress of Richard Neville, 1st Earl of Warwick and 2nd Earl of Salisbury, KG; killed after the Battle of Tewkesbury 4 May 1471, sp and vp; buried Tewkesbury Abbey.
(6) 1471-1483 EDWARD OF WESTMINSTER, elder son of King Edward IV, b in the Sanctuary at Westminster 4 November 1470; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall at his birth; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 26 June 1471; invested at Westminster 17 July 1471; KG 1475; s his father as King Edward V on 9 April 1483, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(7) 1483-1484 EDWARD OF MIDDLEHAM, only son of King Richard III, b at Middleham Castle, Yorkshire, ca December 1473; cr Earl of Salisbury (by his uncle King Edward IV) 15 February 1478; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall on his father’s accession 26 June 1483; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 24 August 1483; invested at York Minster 8 September 1483; dvp at Middleham Castle 9 April 1484; buried Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire.
(8) 1489-1502 ARTHUR TUDOR, elder son of King Henry VII, b at Winchester Castle 19 September 1486; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall at birth; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester and invested at Westminster 29 November 1489; KG 1491: m 14 November 1501, Catherine (who m 2ndly, 11 June 1509, her brother-in-law, King Henry VIII), daughter of Ferdinand II, King of Aragon (and V as King of Castile); dsp and vp at Ludlow Castle 2 April 1502; buried Worcester Cathedral.
(9) 1504-1509 HENRY TUDOR, second son of King Henry VII and brother of the preceding, b at Greenwich Palace 28 June 1491; cr Duke of York and KB, 31 October 1494; KG 1495; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall on the death of his brother Arthur, 2 April 1502; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester and invested at Westminster 18 February 1504; s his father as King Henry VIII,21 April 1509, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(EDWARD TUDOR, DUKE OF CORNWALL, only surviving son and heir of King Henry VIII (by his 3rd wife), was often styled Prince of Wales and was about to be formally cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester when his father d and he s as King Edward VI)
(10) 1610-1612 HENRY FREDERICK STUART, elder son of King James I, b at Stirling Castle 19 February 1594; became heir apparent to the Scottish throne and Duke of Rothesay, etc at birth; became heir apparent to the English throne and Duke of Cornwall on his father’s accession 24 March 1603; KG 1603; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester and invested at Westminster, 4 June 1610; dunm and vp at St James’s Palace 6 November 1612; buried Westminster Abbey.
(11) 1616-1625 CHARLES STUART, second son of King James I and brother of the preceding, b at Dunfermline 19 November 1600; cr Duke of Albany, Marquess of Ormond, Earl of Ross, and Lord Ardmannoch (in the peerage of Scotland) 23 December 1600 (the day of his baptism); KB 1605 and KG 1611; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, etc, on the death of his brother Henry, Prince of Wales 6 November 1612; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester and invested at Whitehall 4 November 1616; s his father as King Charles I, 27 March 1625, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(CHARLES JAMES STUART, DUKE OF CORNWALL, etc, elder son of King Charles I, b and d at Greenwich 13 May 1629, was buried at Westminster Abbey as “Charles, Prince of Wales”, but was never formally so created.)
(12) ca 1638-1649 CHARLES STUART, second, but elder surviving, son of King Charles I, b at St James’s Palace 29 May 1630; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall at birth; declared Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester, although never formally so created, and styled as such from ca 1638; s his father as (de jure) King Charles II, 30 January 1649, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(13) 1688-1688 JAMES FRANCIS EDWARD STUART, sixth and youngest, but only surviving, son of King James II (by his 2nd wife), b at St James’s Palace 10 June 1688; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall at birth; styled Prince of Wales (and by implication Earl of Chester) from 4 July 1688, but was never formally so created; went into exile with his parents December 1688; proclaimed King James III and VIII (following the death of his father) at St Germain-en-Laye 6 September 1701, when any honours he may have held may be deemed to have merged in the Crown; proclaimed in Scotland as King James VIII, 6 September 1715 and again at Perth 1745; known to posterity as “The Old Pretender” and “The Chevalier de St George”: m 3 September 1719, (Maria Casimire) Clementina (d at Rome 18 January 1735; buried Church of the Holy Apostles, Rome), fifth daughter of Prince James Louis Sobieski (elder son of John III, King of Poland); d at Rome 1 January 1766; buried St Peter’s Rome; had issue, two sons.
(CHARLES EDWARD (LOUIS JOHN CASIMIR SILVESTER MARIA) STUART, elder son and heir apparent of the preceding, b at Rome 31 December 1720; styled Prince of Wales, etc, from his birth; held by his adherents to have s his father as King Charles III, 1 January 1766, when all his hypothetical honours merged in the Crown; known to posterity as “The Young Pretender”: m 17 April 1772, Louise Maximilienne Caroline Emanuele (d at Florence 29 January 1824; buried Church of Santa Croce, Florence), daughter of Gustavus Adolphus, Prince of Stolberg-Gedern; dsp legit at Rome, 31 January 1788; buried St Peter’s Rome.)
(14) 1714-1727 GEORGE AUGUSTUS, only son of King George I, b at Herrenhausen, 30 October 1683; cr Baron of Tewkesbury, Viscount Northallerton, Earl of Milford Haven, and Marquess and Duke of Cambridge by Queen Anne, 9 November 1706; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall, etc, on his father’s accession 1 August 1714; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester and invested at Westminster 27 September 1714; s his father as King George II, 11 June 1727, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(15) 1729-1751 FREDERICK LEWIS, elder son of King George II, b at Hanover, 20/31 January 1707; cr Baron of Snowdon, Viscount of Launceston, Earl of Eltham, Marquess of the Isle of Ely, and Duke of Edinburgh by his grandfather King George I, 26 July 1726; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall, etc, on his father’s accession 11 June 1727; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 8 January 1729: m 8 May 1736, Augusta (d at Carlton House, London 8 February 1772; buried Westminster Abbey), sixth and youngest daughter of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha; dvp at Leicester House, London, 20 March 1751; buried Westminster Abbey; had issue, five sons and four daughters.
(16) 1751-1760 GEORGE WILLIAM FREDERICK, elder son of the preceding, b at Norfolk House, St James’s Square, London, 4 June 1738; KG 1749; s his father as Duke of Edinburgh, etc, and became heir apparent to his grandfather King George II, 20 March 1751; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 20 April 1751; s his grandfather as King George III, 25 October 1760, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(17) 1762-1820 GEORGE AUGUSTUS FREDERICK, elder son of King George III, b at St James’s Palace 12 August 1762; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall, etc, at birth; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 19 August 1762; KG 1765; PC 1783; s his father as King George IV, 29 January 1820, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(18) 1841-1901 ALBERT EDWARD, elder son of Queen Victoria, b at Buckingham Palace 9 November 1841; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall, etc, at birth; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 8 December 1841; cr Earl of Dublin 17 January 1850; s his mother as King Edward VII, 22 January 1901, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(19) 1901-1910 GEORGE FREDERICK ERNEST ALBERT, second, but only surviving, son of King Edward VII, b at Marlborough House, London, 3 June 1865; cr Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killarney by his grandmother Queen Victoria, 24 May 1892; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall, etc, on his father’s accession, 22 January 1901; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 9 November 1901; s his father as King George V, 6 May 1910, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
(20) 1910-1936 EDWARD ALBERT CHRISTIAN GEORGE ANDREW PATRICK DAVID, elder son of King George V, b at White Lodge, Richmond Park, 23 June 1894; became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall, etc, on his father’s accession 6 May 1910; cr Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester 23 June 1910; invested at Caernarvon Castle, 13 July 1911; s his father as King Edward VIII, 20 January 1936, when all his honours merged in the Crown.
