His Royal Highness Prince Michael George Charles Franklin of Kent, GCVO, is a first cousin of the Queen and was a page boy at her wedding to the Duke of Edinburgh. He was born in 1942 at Coppins, Iver, in Buckinghamshire, the youngest child of Prince George of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. He was educated at Eton and trained at Mons Officer Cadet School. He had a 20-year career in the Army and saw service in Germany, Hong Kong and Cyprus.
In June 1978 Prince Michael married Baroness Marie Christine Agnes Hedwig Ida, daughter of the late Baron Günther Hubertus von Reibnitz, and formerly wife of Thomas Troubridge. He lost his right of succession following his marriage because the Princess is a Roman Catholic and members of the Royal Family who married Roman Catholics were excluded from the Succession at the time. However, this provision was repealed by the Succession to the Crown Act (2013) and the Prince’s place in the Succession was reinstated.
Prince Michael is involved with around 100 charities and organisations. His many roles include patron of the Brooklands Museum Trust, the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust and the Children’s Burns Trust. He also has his own charity, The Prince Michael of Kent Foundation, which raises funds for Russian heritage, culture, health and post-graduate business education.
