Field Marshal His Royal Highness Prince Edward George Nicholas Paul Patrick, KG, GCMG, GCVO, ADC, the 2nd Duke of Kent, is a first cousin of the Queen. He was born on 9th October 1935 at 3 Belgrave Square in London to Prince George of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. He was educated at Eton and at Institut le Rosey, a boarding school in Switzerland. He subsequently trained at RMA Sandhurst and had a military career lasting 20 years.

The Duke of Kent succeeded to the dukedom in 1942, when he was just 6 years old, following the death of his father in a plane crash. He began to undertake public engagements from a young age and in 1953, he attended the coronation of his cousin, Elizabeth II. He was the third to pay homage at her throne, following the dukes of Edinburgh and Gloucester.

The Duke of Kent is involved with many charities, including as patron of St Mungos and president of the Stroke Association. He is also president of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and president of the RNLI, as well as holding many other high-profile roles. As President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 1969, he attends Wimbledon each year and presents the winners' trophies to the champions at the end of the tournament.

In 1961 the Duke of Kent married Katharine Worsley, daughter of Sir William Arthrington Worsley, 4th Baronet (see that family).
